This is an accessibility statement for Tel Tales.

This website is run by the University of Portsmouth. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some interactive elements will not work when reading the website with assistive software
  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software

Enforcement/Escalation procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

If you need to escalate your issue further, the University has an established complaints procedure. As the website makes clear, complainants will never be disadvantaged by raising a genuine concern.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The University of Portsmouth is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

  • Some colours have insufficient contrast to their background, this fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum). We plan to ensure this contrast is sufficient by September 2020.
  • Some links have discernible names, this fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). There are opportunities to improve the semantics of the controls in our pages, which may enhance the experience of users of assistive technology. We plan to ensure that link names are improved by September 2020.
  • Some Aria attributes on the Glossary page have invalid values, this fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. We plan to develop this page so that it can be interpreted by users with assistive technology by September 2020.
  • Some id attributes on the page are not unique. The value of an id attribute must be unique to prevent other instances from being overlooked by assistive technology. This fails the WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.1 Parsing. We plan to develop this by September 2020.
  • Some list items are not contained within <ul> or <ol> parent elements, this fails the WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships). We plan to ensure that any issues with lists are corrected by September 2020.
  • Some roles do not have all required Aria attributes on the blog page, this fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. We plan to develop this page so that it can be interpreted by users with assistive technology by September 2020.
  • Some frame/iframe elements do not have a title, this fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.4.1 (Bypass Blocks) and success criterion 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. We plan to ensure that any iframes identified without titles are corrected by September 2020.

Disproportionate burden

  • Some page navigation dropdowns are not navigable by keyboard, this fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 2.1.1 keyboard. Alternative navigation is available on those pages.
  • Some third-party content is embedded within Tel Tales via the use of iframes or similar methods. In these cases, what is presented on screen is sometimes not what is presented in the html output that accessibility software sees. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.1 (info and relationships).

How we tested Tel Tales

This website was last tested on 19th September 2019. The test was carried out by the Technology Enhanced Learning team at the University of Portsmouth.

We used the Google Chrome accessibility audit tool to test the pages on Tel Tales.

We tested at least one page from every section of the website, along with the front page. We particularly focussed on those pages which had a high degree of interactivity as these were more likely to cause a problem in terms of accessibility than pages that contain soley text content.

We tested:
